Why Australia? Why now? According to recent reports the “strong economy, good lifestyle and nice weather” is what attracts young Irish workers to Australia on the one year working holiday visa (WHV). With the Irish economy suffering, more and more - young Irish workers are moving abroad to work in Australia & New Zealand where the job markets are still thriving. Australian recruitment sites such as mycareer.com.au/jobs appear to support this with over 8,000 jobs being advertised for Sydney alone encompassing everything from hospitality, retail, sales and so much more. Meanwhile, seek.com.au also have thousands of jobs advertised for Melbourne, Perth and all other Australian cities. USIT offer people aged between 18 – 30 a working holiday visa which allows them to work and travel within Australia for up to one year. The USIT programme is one for young people looking to fund their travels through casual work and not a career development or migration programme so there is plenty for young Irish people to do. Feedback on the ground is indicating that jobs (casual labour) are becoming more available in places like Sydney even. Australia has even made changes to its second working holiday visa to encourage construction workers from the UK and Ireland to head to the country. The change means 18-30 year old Irish workers who work in this sector for a minimum of three months can now stay in Australia for up to two years. With flight prices at a record low and reassurances that casual work is available for Irish workers there’s never been a better time to jet off!
