Orphanage Assistance Nepal

Poverty, past conflicts and emergencies such as earthquakes and flooding have seriously affected the people of Nepal, and turned many children into orphans, with many of them arriving in urban centers like Kathmandu and Chitwan in search for a better life. As there are no Government initiatives to protect and help these children, orphanages have been set-up on NGO basis, where the children are educated and taken care of, and where the enthusiasm and energy of volunteers is greatly needed and appreciated. Even though Nepal has made considerable progress toward reducing poverty over the past years, it remains the poorest country in South Asia with wide discrepancies depending on geographic location, ethnicity, caste and gender. Not only infant mortality rates are a major concern, being among the highest in the region, also the high maternal mortality are alarming, resulting in a life expectancy for women which is considerably lower than for men. Gender disparities are also common when it comes to literacy: only 26% of Nepal's women are literate, compared to 62% of men. With this, inequality has risen to the highest level in South Asia and presents a major challenge to reverse.

The carefully selected projects are located in Kathmandu, Nepal’s historic capital which is nestled in the bowl of the Kathmandu valley, a region of many historic and cultural highlights with a total of five UNESCO World Heritage Sites alone in Kathmandu and its neighboring cities like Kathmandu and Patan Durbar Squares, Swayambhunath and Boudanath with their ancient ‘stupas’ (Buddhist holy shrine), or Nepal’s holiest Hindu pilgrimage site the Pashupatinath Temple. Moreover the valley offers several hiking and biking opportunities, scenic views and peaceful escapes to one of the many Buddhist monasteries.
