Canada Announces Three-Plan To Attract One Million Immigrants To North America

This is some big and brilliant news for young Irish people, with an eye on a year or two abroad.

Canada’s Immigration Minister, Ahem Hussen is hoping the three-year plan to encourage a 60% growth in immigration levels to Canada by 2020 “will guarantee” the country’s future prosperity. Given the growing love-in being fostered by Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau and the Irish people, the news is one to cheer and look forward to!

Despite a forecasted 3% rate of economic growth in 2017, Canada has an aging population and the need to drive economic growth further will hinge upon innovation and in order to combat a declining birth rate. In less boring terms, it means that opportunities to relocate to Canada for young Irish people are only going to increase.

By the numbers, the Canadians hope to increase the numbers of permanent residents to 310,000 in 2018, rising to 330,000 in 2019 and 340,000 in 2020.

“Immigrants will contribute their talents to support economic growth and innovation, helping to keep our country at the forefront of the global economy”, said Hussen, he himself an immigrant, at a press conference in Toronto.

The latest plans serve to further reinforce the fact that Canada is embracing multiculturalism and openness to a historical level with an all-time high of 21.9% of Canadian residents being born overseas in 2016. That’s over 7.5m people, 10,700 of which were added from Ireland in the same year.

With Christmas now firmly around the corner, and another New Year bringing with it a renewed vigor in planning the year abroad that is a borderline rite-of-passage for young Irish people, Canada may have just jumped the queue to the most attractive destination on a Working Holiday.
