    Heavy Duty Mechanic (Overhead crane / lifting equipment experience) Calgary, Canada

    Role:
    Heavy Duty Mechanics perform major and minor repairs, overhauls and servicing on all types of overhead cranes, vehicles, vehicle attachments and material handling equipment.

    Critical performance areas include the following:

    • Inspect, service and maintain overhead cranes, terminal tractors, vehicles and equipment, in accordance with federal and company regulations, including changing oil or repairing, replacing, cleaning and adjusting parts.
    • Diagnose diesel / gas engine, electrical, hydraulic, driveline malfunctions and making required repairs.
    • Use electric and oxy-acetylene welding equipment, lubrication equipment and other vehicle repair tools and equipment, and operate said tools and machinery in a safe and effective manner.
    • Repair various yard equipment machinery.
    • Use measuring devices and understanding visual displays.
    • Inspect all equipment to be repaired for testing and movement to and from shop in yard and shop.
    • Operate all equipment to be repaired for testing and movement to and from shop.
    • Prepare inspection, maintenance, and work reports, and record details on prescribed forms in accordance with established procedures. 

    Working Conditions:
    • Ability to work irregular shifts, including evenings, midnights, weekends, holidays, and occasional overtime.
    • Frequent bending, stooping, squatting, kneeling, performing overhead work, lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds (22 kg).
    • Shop environment, ability to work inside shop and outside shop in all weather conditions.
    • Must be able to work at heights up to 60 feet.
    • Comply with safe work procedures and policies.

    Employment Requirements:
    • High School diploma or equivalent General Education Diploma (GED).
    • Interprovincial Red Seal Certification in either of the following: Heavy Duty Mechanic trade, Commercial Transport or Automotive.
    • Diesel mechanic, Automotive, Truck & Coach, Hydraulics experience.
    • Valid driver's license.
    • Minimum 1 year experience in related Commercial Transport or Heavy Duty work.
    • Ability to certify company equipment in accordance with provincial standards OR become certified to do so.
    • Good hand-eye coordination.
    • Possess your own tools sufficient to perform repairs and service on small equipment. Tools specific to the railway are supplied by the company.

    Assets:
    • Valid commercial driver's license.
    • Experience troubleshooting hydraulic and electronic systems.
    • Welding skills.
    • Relevant work experience in similar working conditions or regulatory/safety environment.
    • Post-secondary education.
    • Basic computer skills. 

    Training:

    Successful candidates will receive paid on-the-job training on new products and updates as required by the company, both theoretical and practical instructions.
    Depending on your level of experience, candidates must have completed 2nd year and registered with trade branch for 3rd year and will attend a series of courses at your work location in Canada or away from your work area for training purposes. Training will include equipment components, control systems, air brakes, start up, basic diesel electric systems and  maintenance regulations. Truck motors, data recorders, as well as fuel, oil, water and air systems will also be covered. Successful completion of this program is essential for performance of future duties.

    Essential Functions/Responsibilities:
    Provide overall management, administration and technical direction for one or more projects.
    Enforces company and project policies, main client interface, and ensures project is constructed in accordance with design, budget and schedule through subordinate managers and supervisors.
    Performs all functions and responsibilities in consonance with the company’s values and beliefs.
     

    • Plan a construction project and prepare a construction schedule in conjunction with the project Superintendent.
    • Co-operate fully with the Project Superintendent to get the project completed.
    • Process contract drawings and specifications and make ensure that the building is built in accordance with these documents.
    • Ensure that the contract drawings are the same as the estimate set of drawings.
    • Process changes received from the Architect including contacting the subcontractor for pricing, checking subcontractor’s quotations to ensure that they are complete and reasonable; and itemizing changes.
    • Meet with Owners and Architects in a professional manner and have the ability to communicate effectively both the concerns and best interests of the company.
    • Ensure payment in full for the contract price including all accumulative changes and credits, etc.
    • Instil a positive working relationship with the Owner and Architect to ensure repeat business.
    • Prepare regular, timely and accurate billings for Owners, and ensure timely payment of subcontractor billings.
    • Monitor in conjunction with the Project Superintendent, a project’s material and labour costs and ensure accurate quality reporting is being conducted.
    • Have the ability to read, interpret, analyse and forecast a project’s cost reports and determine the status of the job in terms of schedule and costing.
    • Be aware of unit costs and monitor and compare daily progress on site with that of the project’s estimate in conjunction with the Project Superintendent,
    • Present oneself as a promotable, innovative, creative, and a self starter.
    • Recognize competent subordinates worthy of promotion and be abreast of position vacancies to ensure staff progression.
    • Conduct project meetings, bi-weekly or monthly as needed.
    • Co-ordinate, manage and communicate with all subcontractors and effectively deal with problems such as delivery, labor, schedule and payment disputes.
    • Maintains a good working knowledge of trade unions, their agreements and stipulations.
    • Be alert to new projects coming up and ensure all necessary company management is kept informed of such information.
    • Ensure that the project is in a positive cash flow position and prepare Project Manager Reports accurately and timely for submission to the Operations Manager.
     
    Skills, Knowledge, Qualifications and Experience:
    • Educational and experience requirements include engineering degree or equivalent combinations of technical training plus 4 years’ experience / knowledge of construction, design, finance and management required.
    • A minimum of five years construction experience in Commercial and Institutional project with a project value over $10MM.
    • Must be able to apply innovative and effective management techniques to maximize employee performance.
    • Thorough understanding of corporate and industry practices, processes, standards etc. and their impact on project activities vital.
    • Superior communication and interpersonal skills essential.
    • Proficiency in  computer system, department software, and typing necessary.

    Experience Requirements:

    • Commercial new construction.
    • Residential new construction.
    • Service and maintenance both in commercial and residential construction.
     
    Working Conditions:
    • Candidates will have to pay for their own accommodation and transport to work.
    • Candidates with a Working Holiday Permit (IEC Visa) and be available to start ASAP will be prioritised but we would also like to hear from candidates if you have the above experience.
     
    Salary:
    Starting wage for a journeyman is CA$28.00 + overtime at time and half. Wages are paid every 2 weeks. An evaluation of performance and pay will be done after 90 days and then annually. The evaluation will be conducted with a view to a pay increase.

    Benefits:
    After 90 days employees will be offered Health (including vision care), Dental and life insurance as well as the option to participate in a group RSP (Retirement Savings Plan). After one year, employees will be offered the option to participate in our Group Registered Pension Plan.
     
    Additional Notes:
    Candidates will need to go for Apprenticeship & Industry Training but the employer will pay for that cost if the interview is successful.
