The Perfect J1 Day In…Boston
It’s that time of the year when college campus conversations will revolve around three things: Pulling another all-nighter to get that assignment in, how mega Christmas is going to be and where the hell am I going to go on my summer J1?
Unfortunately, we can’t help keep you awake at 4am better then caffeine can but we like to think our 60 years of exploring the US can help find the right city for you! We start our ‘Perfect Day In’ series last week with San Francisco. This week, it’s to the East Coast where the Irish practically run the place – Boston.
Staying A Day In Boston Or Longer, Start With An Epic Feed
No matter what you find yourself doing, you’re guaranteed a perfect day in Boston. It’s just that kind of city! Whether you’re flying into the city and have a few hours to spare before heading onto where you will be spending the rest of the summer, a day trip on a day off from camp or your J1 work placement, Boston is always a good choice for a day/night out!
To start your day off with a belly full of great All-American food, South Street Diner is a great shout. On the outskirts of the city, it’s a gem that not a lot of tourists know about. After breakfast, make your way back into the centre by taking the T. Alternatively, take a stroll back through Chinatown and onto Boston Common, a beautiful city park that on a nice sunny day is perfect for a picnic in the park!
The Perfect Afternoon, Whatever Your Budget
Once back in the city centre, make it a priority to go on a whale watching trip! It’s about a 4-hour round trip and worth every penny! If whale watching isn’t for you, or you want a slightly cheaper day in the city, walk along the Boston Freedom Trail.
This way you can explore the history of the city, pick and choose what sites to see in more detail all while keeping costs down and still having a great day out. The map will guide you all the way from Boston Common, through the city, stopping off in spots like The Paul Revere House, Faneuil Hall and onto the Bunker Hill Monument.
Did Someone Say Pizza?
If you’re feeling hungry after all that exploring, one of the best areas for food in Boston City is The North End, also known as the Italian Quarter. Head to Regina’s Pizzeria, you’ll probably have seen the name around, but their restaurant Thatcher Street is the original, and has perfected pizza making, in my humble opinion.
The Hardest Choice Of The Day, Which Bar Is Best?
Heading out for a drink in Boston can be tricky, only because it has so many amazing places to choose from! Any Irish pub around the Faneuil Hall area are always an easy option for good craic. With places like The Black Rose, The Wild Rover, and Durty Nelly’s are all dotted around. If you want to get away from the Irish and get some lovely cocktails,
The Landing at Long Wharf is a perfect open-air bar to enjoy your warm summer evening at. Not 21 yet? Don’t worry! Boston has some great live shows on regularly in The Christopher Columbus Park, right on the harbour. From music, comedy and theatre, there’s something for everyone to enjoy in Boston!
Perfect Day Bonus Round: Other fun things to do in Boston – Take a tour of Fenway Park ($20). Go explore the Harvard University campus. The Aquarium ($27.95) by the harbour is incredible and 100% worth a trip to. These can take up to a whole day themselves so mix and match and you’ll be sure to have the perfect day in Boston!
