Your guide to Chicago

Big city living plus homespun midwestern hospitality makes Chicago an amazing place to live and work. The third most populous city in the US, it has as much going on as its famous coastal counterparts LA and NYC – but is way more chilled (and not to mention cheaper – always a winner).

Like the musical, there’s a hell of a lot to sing about here. From the miles of beaches along Lake Michigan to packed sports stadiums and late-night jazz bars, you’ll be hard pressed to ever find yourself ever bored in the ‘Windy City’.

Why Chicago?

Acclaimed French actress Sarah Bernhardt famously called Chicago ‘the pulse of America’ – and you can really see why. It has a diverse population, a fiercely loyal sports culture, incredible architecture, and some of the best food in the country – from cheesy, deep-dish pizza to soul food via some very tasty hot dogs. The home of music legends Duke Ellington and Muddy Waters, it also has some of the best nightlife in America – with blues bars, jazz clubs, rock pubs and a festival scene that will blow you away.

But unlike similarly sized cities like New York and LA, a night out won’t blow your budget quite so much here. One of the best cities in America and the entire world for sport, it’s also a great place to see a game. The namesake Bulls, Cubs, White Sox, Blackhawks… there’s a menagerie of teams to watch here. Just make sure you get yourself a frosty cold one while you sit courtside.

Where to live in Chicago

The city is defined by its north, south and west sides. And depending on where you live, you'll want to brush up on your baseball intel (the Cubs play on the north side, the White Sox on the south). In the centre, you'll find the Loop and the shopping of the Magnificent Mile. On the north side there's Lincoln Park with its old town theatres, or the beaches and multicultural communities of the Far North Side. The Fulton Market area is also a great spot to set up roots – you’ll find great restaurants and good access to public transport here.

Historic Bronzeville lies to the south, while the west side's trendy Bucktown and Wicker Park have become popular with artists, hipsters and graduates over the last few years.

Where to work or intern

If you’re heading to the USA on a Grad USA, Internship USA or Trainee USA visa, then Chicago houses all the sectors and industries you’d expect of a cosmopolitan city of its size. There’s a robust publishing industry, second only to that of New York. It’s also home to the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, making it an exciting place to intern in America's financial sector.

Green energy, transportation. hospitality and health services are other large Chicago industries. From microbiology to marketing, Chicago has plenty to offer as your base for a year of career training in the USA. Plus, Barack Obama began his career here, so you’re in good company.

The average wage here per hour is give or take USD $15-20, and there’s also often perks such as complimentary housing, tips, staff meals and end of bonus contracts up to USD $500 here too. Each year, we have 1,000+ J1 jobs with our tried-and-trusted US employers across America. Book onto J1 early and select ‘USIT Job’ for access to our online Job Hub where you can search, apply and get hired.

What about the climate?

Chicago’s weather is as famous as its pizza. You'll experience all four seasons in Chicago, with wet springs and humid summers tempered by pleasant Lake Michigan breezes. There’s a reason it’s billed as the ‘Windy City’ after all. Pack your woollies for famously frigid winters – where you’ll need a pair of snow boots and a woolly hat for the sidewalks and a pair of skates to glide around the rinks. July is the warmest month with an average high temperature of 84 °F (29 °C) and an average low of 63 °F (17 °C), so if you’re here during the summer, you’ll get away with shorts and t-shirts or a dress and a light jacket for the evenings.

Best things to do in Chicago

1

Millenium Park

This lovely park is set right by the glistening waters of Lake Michigan, and it’s perhaps the best green space in the whole of Chicago – maybe even Illinois. There’s a whole roster of events on here throughout the year – including festivals – not to mention it’s a great spot for a picnic when the sun’s shining.

2

Boats by a pier with a ferris wheel and skyscrapers in the background

Navy Pier

Over 100 years, old, the beloved Navy Pier stretches out over the lake, and you’ll be able to discover countless restaurants, boutique shops, ever-changing exhibitions and some beautiful gardens too. Plus, there’s a big old Ferris wheel here – who doesn’t love one of them – and regular fireworks displays over the lake during the summer months.

Follow and find out more

Founded back in 1879, this prestigious spot is one of the oldest and largest art museums in the whole of the United States of America. There’s so much to see here that you couldn’t ever do it all in one go. But with works on show by artists like Georgia O’Keeffe and Ellsworth Kelly, you’re gonna want to come back to this one anyway.

4

Row of houses on a sunny street

Wicker Park

This hipster-esque area of the ‘Windy City’ is the place to go if you’re looking for vintage threads, cool-as-a-cucumber cafes and innovative local eateries. Not to mention record shops galore too.
