Shining San

Your guide to San Diego

A surfer's paradise with year-round sunshine and a laid-back attitude, San Diego is the quintessential southern California beach city. But ‘America’s finest city’ (*ahem no pressure then) is more than just its perennially happy people, bleached-haired surfers, great weather, and endless microbreweries.

Located just two hours south of LA at the US-Mexico border, it's also diverse and historic – with a growing economy and an incredibly multicultural outlook. Whether you’re looking for sought-after summer jobs or to grow your career on a Grad USA visa, sunny San Diego is a hot spot for both students and graduates. Best get booking that flight then.

Why San Siego?

As the birthplace of California and its sunniest city, San Diego proudly celebrates its Mexican heritage and year-round outdoor spaces. Away from the lively boardwalks and pristine beaches of the coast, the Old Town is an eclectic mix of historic haciendas, lively tequila bars and colourful taquerias – whipping up some of the best tacos you’ll find out of Mexico itself. While San Diego’s backyard, Balboa Park, is a gargantuan, 1,200-acre complex of gardens, public spaces, museums, art galleries, music venues and the city’s famous zoo – which is a world-leader in conservation.

For obvious reasons, San Diego has a huge influx of both domestic and international tourists over the summer months, making it highly-competitive for both jobs and the housing market. It therefore pays to apply early, but the rewards are more than worth it. People here look like they’re constantly on holiday with their tan and their gleaming pearly-white smiles. There’s a reason it’s called ‘America’s finest city’ after all…

Where to live in San Diego

Most people heading here on a work visa or as a student chasing the beach lifestyle will end up living north of the city in places like Point Loma, Ocean Beach, Mission Beach and Pacific Beach. The Gaslamp District is perhaps the most visited, but each neighbourhood in this ever-growing city offers character, shopping and great food. In the popular East Village, adjacent to downtown, you'll find restaurants, bars, and craft beer spots popping up alongside popular Petco Park, home of the legendary San Diego Padres baseball team. If you’re wanting to rub shoulders with hipsters and fashionistas, then North Park is where you should be heading. It should be noted that some employers will include subsidised accommodation, but these positions are extremely coveted.

Where to work or intern

It may be famous for tacos, beach, the sunny weather and surfing, but San Diego is also home to industries including technological research, biotechnology, green energy and IT. Hospitality and tourism are thriving sectors for obvious reasons, as are medical research, business, healthcare, higher education, maritime industries and defence (San Diego is home to one-third of the US Marines).

The average wage here per hour is give or take USD $15-20, and there’s also often perks such as complimentary housing, tips, staff meals and end of bonus contracts up to USD $500 here too. Each year, we have 1,000+ J1 jobs with our tried-and-trusted US employers across America. Book onto J1 early and select ‘USIT Job’ for access to our online Job Hub where you can search, apply and get hired.

What about the climate?

San Diego has some of the best weather in the whole of the USA, with an average of 251 days of sunshine per year – in the top five of the US’s sunniest cities thank-you-very-much. Given that you’re so close to Mexico, the temperature here stays pretty consistent, averaging highs of 25 degrees Celsius in August and lows of 19 degrees in December and January. It also hardly rains here – precipitation only reaches highs of four inches from December to January, and from May to September, you’ll often receive no rainfall at all.

Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve

You’ll need some wheels to get here, but this 1,750-acre oceanfront reserve is more than worth the effort to get to. The reserve itself was established to protect its namesake tree, the rare species of Torrey Pine, and wildlife including bobcats, coyotes, and various species of migrating seabird. There are miles of hiking trails to be found here, and you can also spot migrating humpbacks and gray whales during the whale migration season.

Balboa Park

The beating, cultural heart of San Diego, Balboa Park is perhaps the place to visit in San Diego. You’ll find a massive space full to the brim of museums and cultural centres – 30 in fact – art galleries, restaurants and more. It’s also home to the world-famous San Diego Zoo – renowned for being one of the world’s best zoos which is home to over 12,000 animals. If that wasn’t enough, it’s also home to shedloads of gardens and greenery – perfect for a date or if you’re looking for some R&R.

Little Italy

Who doesn’t love Italian food am-I-right? Well, add in bakeries with food made by nonnas, local wine bars and various bougie boutiques and you can see why we absolutely love Little Italy. Saturdays see some great farmers markets descend here too, plus there’s some great nightlife here too. Saluti!

Sunset Cliffs

The ideal spot for sunset – duh, look at the name – this oceanfront spot is well-known for its picture-perfect views and people watching. Take a (careful) stroll along the cliffs at dusk to make the most of it, then head to ‘The Staircase’ for one of the romantic views you’ll find anywhere on Earth. Ok, bigging it up, but we stand by it…
